Changing dynamics of antibiotic resistant Escherichia in Caspian gulls shows the importance of longitudinal environmental studies

  08 April 2024

The study investigates Escherichia spp. isolates resistant to antibiotics in Caspian gull chicks in the Nove Mlyny Water Reservoir, Czech Republic. The researchers found 197 E. coli isolates, with a higher prevalence in 2018 compared to 2019 (86%). The decrease was linked to a clonal lineage of E. coli ST11893, which carried blaCMY-2. However, several Escherichia STs were found in gulls and water samples, including high-risk lineages. The study found that AMR in Escherichia can vary greatly in time in synanthropic birds, with a temporary prevalent lineage and several persistent STs.
